View Full Version : Intermittent Tones on Receiving End

While I am on a call the party on the other side hears intermittent tones like I am pushing a button on my phone.
It is intermittent and I do not hear it on my end. The call is placed to a landline.
Any reason for this? I have all the specified ports open on my router and my ATA is highest priority in my routers QOS.
IS there a better way to do this? Does putting this in a DMZ or another configuration help this issue?
BTW, my modem is set in a bridge mode if that matters.
THanks,
Tom

Tom,
Have you had a chance to try a different phone yet? I know it's an intermittent problem and you won't be able to distinguish it immediately but it's worth a shot.
Bridging your modem won't cause any issues, this will be related to either the phone, phone cable, or the phone adapter itself.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience and I will look into it for you.
Thanks,
Allen

Allen: My phone is a Dect 6 Cordless which you know is the beswt technology with none of the typical interference issues. I sit about 2 ft from the receiver side.
These are some common intermittent issues. Are there any common items to look for?
Sometimes I hear tones and sometime the other party hears tones...I think those are keep alive tones or something...
Is their an adjustment in the ATA that might affect this issue?
Also after beiing on a call for 40min or so the line will just go dead. Happens intermittently also. Any ideas what might make a call just drop out... Doesn't necessarily go to a fast tone..just goes dead...I don't know it happened until you hear nothing from the other end.. the other party says, "Where did you go?"
Not the end of the world bt makes me uncomfortable when I'm on an important call.

I've had this problem a few times also... turned out it only happened when I had some big downloads going at the same time on the computer. (I have DSL, too.) If I pause my downloads, the problem usually goes away. I just chalked it up to me not having enough bandwidth to handle both and those tones were part of the result, but maybe the tones happening then was just a coincidence and there's another explanation?

There is no real competitor for bandwidth.
I have this issue with my Dect 6.0 Cordless and a hardwired phone.
I have 438/2.5 and based on VOIP Speedtest, I consistently get:
jitter around 0.2
QOS 92-99%
MOS 4.2
I have a whole house DSL SPlitter and my ATA is behind a WRT54G Router with basic QOS priority port enabled. Not the best but that's as capable as it is without going to 3rd party firmware.
My Sip2102 is set to max upload of 325K and my Codec is 729.
I just rec'd a email from Allen who is sending me a replacement ATA so we will see if that addresses the issue.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks to Allen for your assistance.
Turns out their is a SPA2102 Firmware 5.2.5 update that addresses this random DTMF tone issue.
Turns out that certain frequencies in speech actually causes the adapter to respond with a tone. It is especially sensitive to high frequencies. (women tend to have this issue more because of higher pitch - doesn't explain why I have it...??)
This firmware upgrade is designed to deal with it. I have just got it installed with Allen's help and will see if it helps the problem..
I will report back.

Hi Tom,
I have been having the same problem of people on the other end hearing tones while we are speaking. I am interested in the upgrade you wrote about. Where do I go and what do I have to do to get this upgrade?
I am not a computer person, just a surfer, so I don't understand a lot of the jargon, but if I am given instructions, I can usually get the job done myself!
Also, I am having real reception problems the last few days. does anyone remember the web site that you go to to check the band width?
Thanks!
Wendy

Wendy: I suggest you give Allen from Customer Service a call. He can help you with your issues.
THere are a number of variables that can effect your QOS.
1. If you are on a network, your ATA should be put in front of your router right after your dsl/cable modem. The ATA has the capability to reserve the needed upside bandwith while you are on a call and keep other users from competing for the bandwidth. The uplink side is the most critical for the other side to hear you clearly. Typically most ISP's concentrate on faster download speeds vs the upload since that is what the majority use the wqeb for. However. VOIP needs stable slice of upside bandwith for a good QOS.
When the ATA is put directly after your modem it will do this. If you put it after your router, it will not and your ATA will have to compete for the upload speed creating intermittent QOS problems depending on who/what is accessing your bandwidth at the same time you are usimg your VOIP.
As far as the firmware goes.. you should discuss this with Allen.
